Garage Door Opener Not Working? Check These First

Homeowner guide   Practical, plain-English steps

Before assuming the worst, these common and often DIY-fixable causes are worth checking.

Dead remote battery is the most common cause

It sounds obvious, but a dead battery in the remote is the single most common reason a garage door won't respond — always check this first.

Misaligned safety sensors are a frequent culprit

Most openers won't close the door if the safety sensors near the floor are misaligned or obstructed — look for a blinking light indicating misalignment.

The remote may need reprogramming

If the battery is fine and sensors are aligned, the remote itself may have lost its programming — most opener manuals include simple reprogramming steps.

Check the wall switch too

If the wall-mounted switch also doesn't work, the issue is more likely the opener unit itself rather than just the remote.

When it's the motor itself

If none of the above resolves it, the opener's motor or logic board may be failing — this typically needs a professional diagnosis or replacement.
